Position Overview

The director, regulatory and technical affairs is responsible for executing against regulatory strategy and advocacy campaigns on issues impacting the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry and    that align with Consumer Brands’ strategic priorities. The director will manage complex issues, frame narrative, and serve as a recognized expert and trusted communicator, both internally and externally, within the regulatory arena. Reporting to the vice president, regulatory & technical affairs, this role will proactively identify emerging regulatory policy issues, concerns, and opportunities that enhance the intersection of advancing the CPG industry’s agenda and meeting expectations of the American consumer.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Regulatory Policy

  • Work collaboratively to monitor the regulatory landscape, both with members of the organization and U.S. regulatory agencies.
  • Proactively identify issues and opportunities for CPG within regulatory affairs that align with strategic priorities.
  • Inform organizational regulatory policy positions and ongoing, as well as future, advocacy efforts.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with members, U.S. regulatory agencies, the research community, and NGOs.
  • Participate in key regulatory meetings and industry events.

Issues Management

  • May manage one professional team member working on a variety of  regulatory and technical issues, as staffing permits.
  • Engage with and support cross-functional teams to problem-solve and manage issues broadly.
  • Lead and manage projects on a variety of issues.
  • Provide general expertise, assistance and representation on technical and regulatory issues.
  • Lead discussions and consensus building activities with association member  companies and stakeholders.
  • Analyze proposed regulations, guidance and other emerging issues as needed.
  • Support the creation of stakeholder comments, talking points and slide decks on issues.

Experience & Education

  • A minimum of a BA/BS degree is required. An advanced degree such as an MS is a plus.
  • 5-7 years of related employment (required) in:
  • The food, beverage, or personal care products industry; and/or
  • FDA, USDA and/or EPA regulatory and policy issues.
  • Experience in both sectors is highly desirable but not a requirement.
  • A track record of demonstrated results in government, association and/or political environments and/or policy development and implementation.

Skills

  • Knowledge of federal rulemaking process and the federal laws and regulations that cover CPG products.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Passion for and ability to learn new and complex issues rapidly and drive results.
  • Ability to persuasively communicate in concise messages and frame narrative on issues to both technical and high-level audiences.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Office 365 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent customer service skills and email etiquette.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work.
  • Flexibility in learning new software and/or computer/technical applications.
  • Well versed In the use of communications platforms including MSTeams and Zoom.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work on cross-functional teams.
