Position Overview

The director, SmartLabel is responsible for building awareness, leading implementation efforts, and spearheading retention and growth for the CPG transparency initiative, SmartLabel. This role maintains the integrity of the SmartLabel program and drives the evolution of the initiative. Reporting to the general counsel and senior vice president, operations and initiatives, the director will build and maintain program benefits and guardrails that protect program integrity and spur growth.

Key areas of responsibility:

Stakeholder Management

  • Grow the program by fostering relationships with current and prospective brands.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as regulators, NGOs, and policy makers to drive awareness and support for the platform as a marketplace solution for digital education and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead across all SmartLabel working groups to create excitement for the program, support program integrity, and support consensus. Track progress and maintain accountability for program milestones.
  • Monitor the CPG landscape for opportunities to enhance and evolve the SmartLabel program.
  • As needed, organize and lead cross-functional task forces to tackle emerging issues; for example, in regulatory or sustainability areas.
  • Galvanize internal resources like marketing, regulatory, legal and government relations to support program awareness and growth.

Program Management

  • Position SmartLabel for continued growth. Proactively identify revenue opportunities.
  • Oversee onboarding of new brands and third-party service providers.
  • Craft engagement strategy with existing participants. Develop retention processes and strategy to ensure current participants are satisfied with the initiative’s progress.
  • Problem-solve requests from prospective/participating brand owners, service- and solution-providers that do not fit into day-to-day program administration.
  • Oversee periodic communications and marketing assets.
  • Manage the audit process to ensure participant pages are in compliance with the style and attribute guides.
  • Oversee updates to the Implementation guide to ensure voluntary and required guidance is up-to-date.
  • Create educational assets, including re-launch and maintain


  • Drive increasing program visibility on various platforms.
  • Manage training, development and supervision of the SmartLabel team (two employees).
  • Lead meetings and presentations with key stakeholders, including NGOs and other associations to build awareness and support.
  • Present to participating brands through working groups and one-on-one meetings.
  • Represent and promote SmartLabel through exhibitions and presentations at industry conferences.

Experience & Education:

  • A minimum of a BA/BS degree is required. An advanced degree such as an MBA is a plus.
  • 7-10 years of related work experience required.
  • Demonstrated results leading an initiative or program.
  • Regulatory or technical experience in CPG preferred.


  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Ability to be productive and drive results in the face of ambiguity.
  • Superior interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Public speaking skills, including the executive presence to represent the association at industry forums and events desirable.
  • Strong data and analytical skills including the ability to present complex data in terms non-specialized audiences can understand.
  • Team player who thrives in a high-energy, multitasking and collaborative work environment.
  • Effortlessly adjust to changes in priorities, and balance short-term deliverables with long-term strategic goals while producing a high-caliber work product.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.)
