Consumer Brands Association Releases New Study: CPG Industry Drives Nearly $200 Billion Economic Impact in Texas

ARLINGTON, Va. — A new study released today by the Consumer Brands Association reveals the unparalleled economic impact of the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry in Texas. Conducted by PwC, the research highlights the CPG sector as a major manufacturing employer, supporting more than 1.8 million jobs in the state, which is more jobs than the population of Dallas, and contributing $196.8 billion to the state’s economy, which is enough money to build 164 AT&T Stadiums.

“The consumer packaged goods industry is a driving force in Texas’ formidable economy,” said John Hewitt, senior vice president of state affairs at Consumer Brands. Every product lining the shelves of local grocery stores — from the food and beverages we choose to give our families to the household and personal care products that make our lives easier — represents the culmination of a vast economic ecosystem. This robust industry doesn’t just serve millions of Texans daily; it fuels job creation, drives innovation and contributes billions to the state’s GDP.”

The comprehensive study, analyzing employment, labor and economic data from 2022, uncovers the far-reaching influence of the CPG industry in Texas:

  • Employment Powerhouse: Directly and indirectly supports more than 1.8 million jobs, accounting for 10% of Texas’s total employment.
  • Income Generator: Contributes $111.7 billion in labor income, fueling local economies and supporting families statewide.
  • Economic Catalyst: Generates $196.8 billion in GDP, or 8.2% of Texas’s economy. Texas’s CPG industry ranks fifth in the nation for total economic output.

The CPG industry’s footprint in Texas’s stretches far beyond manufacturing. This sector encompasses:

  • Agricultural Partnerships: Texas’s CPG companies work closely with Texas’s farmers, supporting the state’s $100 billion agricultural industry.
  • Logistics Powerhouse: With the Port of Houston — one of the top 10 largest ports in the U.S. — the CPG industry significantly contributes to Texas’s transportation and warehousing sectors, ensuring products reach consumers efficiently.
  • Retail Ecosystem: From small, local grocers to major chains, the CPG industry supports a vast network of retailers, contributing to community vitality across urban and rural areas alike.

“So many industries are intertwined with the CPG industry, which is one of the characteristics that makes it truly unique,” continued Hewitt. “From the farmers who grow the crops, to the truck drivers who get products where they need to go, the extraordinary impact of our industry cannot be overstated. The findings in this report also reinforce the need for state and federal policies that facilitate job creation, spur innovation and build consumer trust.”
