Consumer Brands Association Releases New Study: CPG Industry Drives Nearly $60 Billion Economic Impact in Minnesota
ARLINGTON, Va. — A new study released today by the Consumer Brands Association reveals the unparalleled economic impact of the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry in Minnesota. Conducted by PwC, the research highlights the CPG sector as a major manufacturing employer in the Gopher State. The industry supports more than 500,000 jobs in the state, which is more jobs than the entire population of Minneapolis, and contributes $58.3 billion to the state’s economy, which is enough money to build 33 U.S. Bank Stadiums for the Minnesota Vikings.
“In an ever-changing economic landscape, the consumer packaged goods industry stands as a pillar of strength in Minnesota’s economic foundation, consistently driving growth and stability,” said John Hewitt, senior vice president of state affairs at Consumer Brands. “The industry is deeply woven into the fabric of Minnesota communities, creating a network of high-quality jobs that sustain families and fuel local economies. From breakfast tables in Minneapolis to dinner tables in the cabins up north, our industry provides the essential items that power Minnesotans’ daily lives, fosters innovation and reinforces the state’s reputation as an economic powerhouse in the Midwest and beyond.”
The comprehensive study, analyzing employment, labor and economic data from 2022, uncovers the far-reaching influence of the CPG industry in Minnesota:
- Employment Powerhouse: Directly and indirectly supports more than 500,000 jobs, accounting for 13.1% of Minnesota’s total employment.
- Income Generator: Contributes $35.5 billion in labor income, fueling local economies and supporting families statewide.
- Economic Catalyst: Generates $58.3 billion in GDP, or 13% of Minnesota’s economy.
The CPG industry’s footprint in Minnesota stretches far beyond manufacturing. This sector encompasses:
- Agricultural Partnerships: Minnesota’s CPG companies work closely with Minnesota’s farmers, supporting the state’s $21.3 billion agricultural industry.
- Logistics Powerhouse: The CPG industry significantly contributes to Minnesota’s transportation and warehousing sectors, ensuring products reach consumers efficiently.
- Retail Ecosystem: From small, local grocers to major chains, the CPG industry supports a vast network of retailers, contributing to community vitality across urban and rural areas alike.
“A holistic view of the CPG industry reveals a vital economic chain, with each link representing an essential sector that the CPG industry helps support — from agriculture to transportation to retail,” continued Hewitt. “The findings in this report also reinforce the need for state and federal policies that facilitate job creation, spur innovation and build consumer trust.”
