Following a Science & Risk Based Process

The consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry delivers safe, affordable and convenient products that consumers trust to be a part of their everyday life. From pantry staples to cleaning supplies, each product must meet rigorous science and risk-based safety standards, including comprehensive processes for evaluating the safety of ingredients long before reaching grocery store shelves.

Addressing PFAS and Broader Contaminants

As the makers of America’s food, beverage, personal care and household brands, the safety of our products and the well-being of our consumers is our number one priority. That’s why the CPG industry makes every effort to remove or limit PFAS and other chemicals of concern from products and packaging and adheres to the regulations set by the FDA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Consumer Brands Association is supportive of national standards grounded in risk-based science and the regulatory primacy held by long-standing federal authorities. Conversely, state and local government mandates that are inconsistent with national standards create confusion for consumers and jeopardize their ability to access clear and reliable product information across
CPG product sectors from food and beverage to household cleaning and cosmetics. To that end, Consumer Brands advocates for consistency with the EPA, FDA and Consumer Products Safety Commission to utilize their authority to protect consumers under the Toxic Substances Control Act, Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act and the Hazardous Substances Act to regulate consumer products and packaging in a manner that is protective of public health.

The industry has long invested in packaging technology and innovation to ensure product safety, shelf life and sustainability. Specific packaging components make tamper proof seals possible, for example, protecting the product and consumer. CPG manufacturers also routinely conduct testing, and many participate in voluntary hazard assessment programs and new chemical screening programs to scale up their ability to innovate and deliver for consumer needs while maintaining safety standards for product and packaging materials.

What We Do

Lead industry efforts to collaborate with federal & state legislators and regulators on policies that support innovation and access to safe, affordable and convenient CPG products.

Defend a rigorous science and risk-based process to ensure the safety and integrity of ingredients at every stage, including once they are in the market and available to consumers.

Build consumer confidence and minimize consumer confusion by reinforcing the safety of food & beverage, personal care and household ingredients.
