Consumer Brands Association Releases New Study: CPG Industry Drives Over $110 Billion Economic Impact in Pennsylvania

ARLINGTON, Va. — A new study released today by the Consumer Brands Association reveals the unparalleled economic impact of the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry in Pennsylvania. Conducted by PwC, the research highlights the CPG sector as a major manufacturing employer in the Keystone State. The industry supports more than one million jobs in the state, which is more than three times the population of Pittsburgh, and contributes $111.8 billion to the state’s economy, which is enough money to build nearly 400 Acrisure Stadiums (formerly Heinz Field).

“The CPG industry is a cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s economy,” said John Hewitt, senior vice president of state affairs at Consumer Brands. “Look no further than the well-known ‘Snack Belt’ to understand the significance and impact of our industry on Pennsylvania communities. We are proud to provide the food, beverage, household and personal care products Pennsylvanians use every day while creating good-paying jobs and driving economic growth.”

The comprehensive study, analyzing employment, labor and economic data from 2022, uncovers the deep influence of the CPG industry in the Keystone State:

  • Employment Powerhouse: Directly and indirectly supports more than one million jobs, accounting for 13% of Pennsylvania’s total employment.
  • Income Generator: Contributes over $67 billion in labor income, fueling local economies and supporting families statewide.
  • Economic Catalyst: Generates $111.8 billion in GDP, or 12.3% of Pennsylvania’s economy. Pennsylvania’s CPG industry ranks second in the nation for total economic output.

The CPG industry’s footprint in Pennsylvania stretches far beyond manufacturing. This sector encompasses:

  • Agricultural Partnerships: Pennsylvania’s CPG companies work closely with Pennsylvania’s farmers, supporting the state’s $81.5 billion agricultural industry.
  • Logistics Powerhouse: The CPG industry significantly contributes to Pennsylvania’s transportation and warehousing sectors, ensuring products reach consumers efficiently.
  • Retail Ecosystem: From small, local grocers to major chains, the CPG industry supports a vast network of retailers, contributing to community vitality across urban and rural areas alike.

“Manufacturing is just one component of the CPG industry,” continued Hewitt. “The interconnectedness of agriculture, transportation, retail and so many other industries is what makes this vast economic engine truly remarkable. The findings in this report reinforce the need for state and federal policies that facilitate job creation, spur innovation and build consumer trust.”
