How Consumer Brands’ New Online Resource Emphasizes the Importance of Food Processing

As I’ve written before, the science behind keeping our nation’s food supply safe is immensely important to me, both professionally and, as a mom of two, personally. Navigating the online discourse about what we choose to feed ourselves and our families can feel virtually impossible most days as we’re served increasingly more superfluous misinformation dressed as “warnings” or outright parent shaming. And yet most of this alarmist content doesn’t consider the various real-life, daily circumstances behind our decisions, whether they are financial, based on dietary needs or offer some time back in our busy lives.

That’s why I’m particularly excited about the new website by Consumer Brands: Food Processing Facts. The site is dedicated to offering fact-based information and dispelling myths around food processing, food safety and nutrition through reliable, well-researched content and expert insights about the benefits of processing for America’s food supply.

The companies I’m proud to represent, the makers of America’s trusted household brands, are committed to providing convenient access to nutritious, affordable, and safe food and beverage products, and processing plays a critical role in delivering on this promise to consumers. The website helps answer questions about why we need food processing and how it contributes to nutrition, food security, safety and accessibility. It also features a resource library with a comprehensive collection of fact-based articles, research papers and expert opinions that help separate fact from fiction regarding the conversation about “ultra-processed” foods and their impact on our health.

This isn’t the first time we’ve gone beyond the headlines to delve into the link between food processing and food safety — including the regulations companies have to follow when making food and beverage products and how the FDA oversees thisnutrition, prioritizing and respecting consumer choice and innovation that meets evolving consumer demand — and many of those posts can be found on Food Processing Facts, along with research, insights from experts and more.

Moreover, Food Processing Facts joins Consumer Brands’ other transparency-minded initiatives, Facts up Front and the award winning SmartLabel on the mission to connect consumers with information beyond the label and the headlines. While Facts up Front places important nutrition information on the front of packages, SmartLabel allows consumers to go beyond the Nutrition Facts panel with just the scan of a QR code.

Overall, our goal in creating Food Processing Facts is to shift the conversation past the click-bait headlines and create a trusted hub for information rooted in science, which paves the way toward a more constructive dialogue about food and nutrition, which we look forward to continuing.
